Frozen Bone Broth FAQs

Why choose Bone Brewhouse bone broth?
Our broths are nutrient-rich and delicious, made using traditional methods with simple ingredients in a federally inspected facility to ensure the highest quality and safety. Our bones are sourced from Alberta, Canada, close to our production facilities. The chickens are ethically raised cage-free.

Find our frozen broths at your local independent health food store or in the natural freezer section at select grocery chains across Canada. Currently, not available in the US.

How do you prepare frozen bone broth?

Stovetop: Thaw overnight in refrigerator or run container under hot water to loosen broth. Heat in a covered saucepan on medium heat and stir frequently till hot.

Microwave: Heat from frozen or thawed state (container is microwave-safe)> Remove lid and pierce film to allow venting. If frozen, heat at 60% power for 5 minutes, stir, then heat on high for 3 minutes or until it reaches the desired temperature. If thawed, microwave on high for 3 minutes, then let stand for 1 minute. Caution: container and broth may be hot! Carefully remove container from microwave and stir thoroughly to even out heat. Time is approximate as microwave ovens vary.

Note: Immediately refrigerate unused broth and consume within a week of opening.

Is there a difference between instant bone broth and fresh in terms of benefits?
Just like our traditional broths, our instant broths are made from slow simmered bones. But with the instant version, we can offer a wider range of delicious flavors, while also providing higher protein and nutritional benefits to our customers like added MCT oil to support high-protein diets in a portable format.

When refrigerated (after thawing the frozen broth), it becomes thick and jelly like. Should it?
Yes! The gel tells you that the broth was simmered for many hours, that the ratio of bones to water is high, and that the broth was not overheated during the process. These steps ensure the broth contains the maximum amount of nutrients possible. Our traditional, small batch cooking method produces a gel every time, giving you a broth that delivers both nutrition and flavour.

Are your bones “hormone-free”?
In Canada, the practice of giving artificial or added hormones to poultry was banned in 1963. Our chicken, like every other chicken in Canada, is not given any artificial or added hormones. The term “hormone free” is a bit misleading because hormones do occur naturally in animals, birds and plants.

Is your frozen broth pasteurized?
No. Our frozen broth is slow simmered at a temperature that optimizes the extraction of protein and other nutrients from the bones while ensuring food safety. This process, along with the fact that our broth is frozen immediately after packing eliminates the need to pasteurize our broth.

Is it normal for your frozen broth to separate and be cloudy?
Absolutely! We filter the broth through fine mesh screens but don’t “micro-filter”. And we don’t add emulsifies, gums, or other stabilizers to prevent the natural separation that occurs.

What is the shelf life of your frozen broths?
In terms of expiry, our frozen broth has an best before date of approximately 1 year from the production date. Though, technically, the frozen is good for years provided the seal is unbroken and it has been kept frozen.

Once the product is thawed and the seal is broken, we recommend keeping it in the fridge and consuming the broth within 5-7 days.

Is your plastic container BPA-FREE and microwaveable?
Yes.
