Are Bone Brewhouse bone broths organic?
Share
We often get asked if our bone broths are organic. The short answer is, not yet. Since we launched in 2016, our goal has been to create affordable broths for consumers, using sustainable, responsibly raised chicken and beef bones.
We’re more than keen to pursue organic options – in fact, we revisit the idea of fully converting to organic bone broths every year. However, there are two major barriers to doing so in a way that’s environmentally sustainable and affordable for consumers: lack of adequate supply and even more importantly, cost.
Certified organic bones are pricy and limited in supply
As you’ve likely experienced at the grocery store, organic food is more expensive than buying food grown the conventional way. For farmers to be certified organic, it’s a costly, cumbersome, and lengthy process.
For chicken and beef farmers, it’s even more complicated and expensive. For example, every acre of the farm has to be certified organic, 100% of feed has to be certified organic, the animals have to be free range with plenty of roaming space — in addition to other strict and costly regulations. And that raises the price of organic bones in a big way.
No matter which avenues we’ve explored, the costs involved with organic broth are at least two times higher than regular broth. The prohibitive cost of organic bones at this time would make the price of broth out of reach for most people. And that flies in the face of our commitment to keep bone broth affordable for all — especially now, when so many of us are looking for ways to stretch our food dollars.
Our broths have been crafted for health, affordability, and sustainability from day one
Organic options may not be possible yet, but we’ve always been fully committed to creating super healthy, affordable broths — in both our instant and classic options. We use clean, non-GMO ingredients, and only source bones from ethically raised, cage-free chickens and grass-fed beef.
We also cut out excess fat, sodium, and calories — but without sacrificing taste. All our broths are packed with nourishing collagen, amino acids, minerals, and micronutrients that help with:
- Gut health and digestion
- Immunity
- Inflammation
- Hair, skin, and nail health
- Joint health
- Weight management
It’s equally important for us to make sustainable choices in everything we do. The very process of making bone broth gives bones that would have ended up in a landfill a second, health-giving life. What’s more, we’re always searching for new and better ways to minimize environmental impact. As an example, we ship our instant broth without the excessive, wasteful packaging commonly used by online retailers.
What’s on the horizon
We’ll continue to keep a close eye on things on the organic front. The market is moving in the right direction as more farmers make the switch to raising organic livestock. That will help bring costs down and increase the supply of bones. Once there is a large enough, consistent volume available to create more affordable and sustainable organic options, we’re fully committed to making the move.
